Internship Interview Tips for CareerDC Interns

Once we have arranged an interview between you and a potential host company, we will send you an interview confirmation email, which will link you with the company and your interviewer. You should reply to this email to confirm you will attend the interview.

Here are a few tips to help you do your best in the interview.

Before the interview

  • Review the company and learn what they do. You can look up information online, and a good place to start is the company website. Think of how you, as an intern, would fit in with what the company does and think of a few good questions you might like to ask them at the interview to show your interest.

  • Have another look at your resume and think about your skills and abilities and how you could apply your current knowledge to tasks with the host company. Think about your internship goals as well and how you think you could reach them during the internship, and how your internship would be beneficial to the company, too. These ideas can help you during the interview.

  • Plan your travel to get to the interview on time. The best thing would be to do that a good few days in advance, and if you can, even visit the company’s location a few days before the interview so that you know where it is and how long it’s likely to take. Check that trains and buses are running on the day if you’re using public transport, and plan for parking in advance if you’re driving.

On the day of the interview

  • Be professional by dressing for the occasion, which may call for a suit or smart, casual, tidy clothes. And check that you are presentable overall with tidy hair and without too much makeup or jewellery.

  • Bring a copy of your resume and any internship documentation, such as your insurance or any other documents the host organisation may need to sign. Although they may not ask for this, it is good to show that you are prepared and organised. You can also bring your Academic Transcript to show the subjects you have studied and your results.

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled interview time to find the office and show punctuality. This also gives you some time to sit down and prepare yourself rather than rushing straight into the interview and losing focus. Be sure to know the name of the person interviewing you and ask for them at reception (you can find this information in the interview confirmation email). When they call for you, introduce yourself with a firm handshake and remember that a smile goes a long way.

  • During the interview, in addition to answering the interviewer's questions, discuss details of the internship, including the potential start date, internship length, days you’ll be available to intern, and the internship tasks. Also, ask them when they will inform you of the interview's outcome.

  • At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for the time and the opportunity to meet.

  • After the interview, on the day of the interview, get in touch with your CareerDC internship coordinator so that you can give them feedback on your interview.

If you have any questions about getting ready for your interview, please contact your internship coordinator at CareerDC well in time before your interview to get additional information and advice.

We wish you all the best in your interview!
