You are excited about the new internship, but you’re probably a little nervous about your first day. Don’t worry, it happens to everybody!
- Do your homework before the first day
While preparing for the interview, you’ve likely done your research of the company. Even so, the night before your first day you should do some additional research on the company’s business, history and culture to refresh your memory. And the most important thing is, check the office address and the transportation route again to make sure that you won’t be late tomorrow.
- How to dress
What to wear? Dress conservatively and formally for the first day. Don’t try stand out by wearing your most fashion clothes, you don’t want your new colleagues talking more about your appearance than your professionalism, great ideas and friendly personality. Also ensure you have hair and nails clean and styled.
- What to bring
A notepad and a pen are definitely essential! Be prepared to meet with your supervisor to discuss company expectations, goals, and performance assessment. Write down the names of the people you meet, you can start with their names before asking them questions instead of being rude. Take a packed lunch because you never know what your first day brings. Your new supervisor may have scheduled you a big day of meeting everyone and training and completely forgotten that you might need to eat. Or your new colleagues all bring the packed lunches and they invite you to join them.
- How to act
Generally, you will be assigned a supervisor during your internship and he/she will give you your daily schedule and specific tasks. Don’t be shy and take the lead. Ask questions if you don’t understand your duties and ask for help. During work hours, keep personal phone use to a minimum. Phones should also be set on silent or vibrate in order to avoid disturbing others in the office. Also be careful with the communications with colleagues. Avoid sensitive subjects, such as money, religion, and politics, and stay on safe subjects, such as the weather or sports.
