If you want to do an internship in Australia, you have to have to plan your budget carefully. Here are some information and tips about budgeting life in Australia.
The easiest way to save money on flight tickets is, of course, to book as soon as possible. Some companies will confirm internships quite early, so you can plan everything beforehand. Depending on where you are coming, you can find many websites where you can compare prices and book your flight. A very popular one is Skyscanner. If you are travelling within Australia, check out for example Jetstar’s or Tigerair’s offers.
FOOD & EVERYDAY PRODUCTS
Shopping in Australia can sometimes be very expensive, especially when you are living in greater cities like Sydney. One week grocery shopping might cost you about $50 AUD. Avoid small overpriced convenience stores if possible. Instead, go to Woolworths and Coles (biggest supermarkets) or receive good offers at Aldi. The most popular drugstore has to be Priceline. Also, you will find many chemist warehouse stores whose prices are usually much lower than in other shops.
TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTS
In order to rent a car in Australia, you should have an international driving license. If your license is not in English, it is mandatory. Additionally, you have to be 21+! Avis or Hertz offer this service.
- Public Transport (Buses, Trains, Trams)
Here, you find out about services provided in the different states:
- New South Wales (Sydney): http://www.transportnsw.info/
- Victoria (Melbourne): http://ptv.vic.gov.au/
- Western Australia (Perth): https://www.transport.wa.gov.au
- Southern Australia (Adelaide) : https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/
- Queensland (Brisbane) : http://translink.com.au/
PHONE & INTERNET
We advise you to buy an Australian SIM card, but first check if your phone is unlocked. Optus has good sim packs (e.g. 300 minutes, unlimited SMS/MMS, 1.5GB for $30 AUD per month). However, there is a much cheaper way when your accommodation offers WIFI and you only need Internet. In this case, check out Amaysim (1GB for $10 AUD per month). If you have a Skype account, you can buy for example a $10 voucher (allows several hours of phoning) and make (inter)national calls whenever you like, provided that you have Internet.
SIGHTSEEING, TRAVELLING & FREE TIME
Travelling from one place to another in Australia can sometimes take a long time. The airline websites above sometimes have cheap flight offers below $50. Use coupon apps, like Groupon or Scoopon to receive vouchers for free time activities (cinema, sports, events) or restaurants and cafes. Students usually get concession for museum entries, cinemas ($15 AUD instead of $20 AUD) etc. Cigarettes and alcohol are very expensive. A pack of Marlboro cigarettes is $20 AUD and a beer costs $8.00.
